Minnesota’s 3 major biomes support a variety of trees and shrubs providing opportunity and a challenge to learn. We’ll cover a few species of Minnesota native deciduous trees and finish with a glimpse at a few coniferous species as well. This presentation will provide insight into utilizing native species in our native landscapes and private gardens.
Dave Hanson recently retired from MnDOT’s Office of Environmental Stewardship. Dave completed a Bachelor of Science Degree, from the University of Minnesota, in Assessment and Modeling of Natural Resources followed by a master’s degree focusing on Urban and Community Forestry. As an ISA Certified Arborist and Urban Forester at the University of Minnesota, Dave taught plant identification skills to ISA Certified Arborists, Master Gardeners, Tree Care Advocates, Municipal Employees, and anyone else listening, including CCM crews and a classroom full of dendrology students. As a Vegetation Management Specialist with MnDOT Dave authored Minnesota Noxious Weeds and worked to protect threatened and endangered species across Minnesota. Now in retirement, he still teaches identification and vegetation management skills while honing his own skills daily in the woods of Minnesota and arboretums of the upper Midwest.
