Garden Tour at John Kramer’s.
John has been a Wild Ones Big River Big Woods member for 4 years. He is generously offering a tour of his native plantings. Here is a description of his process of converting a typical suburban lot:
“I started out as a vegetable gardener and our back yard still produces local organic food. My interest in natives has gradually taken over and as I have added more beds have reduced my lawn mowing time from 45 to 15 min. I started out gradually by removing existing plants and replacing with natives. About 3 years ago I had acquired enough knowledge and plants that I felt comfortable smothering a large section of grass in our front yard, dividing existing natives, growing out 200 native seedlings, buying a few others as I took the plunge into a new style of gardening.
As a native plant advocate one of my primarily goals is to demonstrate an alternative to ‘traditional landscaping’ that is pleasing and doable for others. Especially from the curb view, I have tried to use native plants in a fairly traditional way (keeping a strip of grass in front of a fence, using some fairly formal looking natives, and having symmetrical groupings). My yard is fairly sloped so you’ll see a lot of terraces (including a terraced rain garden). I am passionate about using local resources, doing most of what I do myself, and spending as little money as possible (so money isn’t an obstacle for anyone else – okay, and I’m a very frugal person too!). I look forward to talking with people as we tour our yard and hope that I too can learn things from this knowledgeable crew.”
