Transforming Urban Lawn Into Welcoming Habitat
Judi Petkau will share the story of turning the mostly lawn yard of her Como Park area home into mostly garden, while learning about and adding-in native plants and shrubs along the way. Motivated to support the endangered Rusty Patch Bumble bee (and to have a noisy, busy, buzzing yard full of life), she began in 2014 by rethinking the space, smothering sections of lawn each year, and tackling a tricky front slope. She will share before and after shots of the project over the past 5 seasons and share tips, lessons learned and favorite plant finds while creating habitat for wild critters, including the humans who live there.
Judi has an art background and loves designing spaces with plant forms and colors. When it comes to the science of gardening, she’s an active and ongoing learner, benefiting from Wild Ones and the Ramsey County Master gardener program.
